Well, I would never really know about the co-founder Apple Inc., Steve Jobs (unfortunately he has passed away last week), if my teacher did not give this task that I have to watch the video of his speech at Stanford University in 2005 for the graduation commencement. He is just so inspirational person! Who would have thought that someone as spectacular as him never graduated from his college? It makes us wondering about what is the secret behind his success when he was alive?
Steve has three personal stories in which he advocates to follow your heart and doing what you love. The first story is about connecting the dots. We all know his story is legendary. Being adopted at an early age, dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, slept on friends' floors, returned coke bottles for 5 cent deposits to buy food, walked 7 miles for good meal once a week.
"You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards", Steve said. It means that we can't see what future brings to us right now, but we can connect what we've got now with the dots and everything we did in the past. Everything deserves a why. That words are implicit out from the Steve's speech, that why we can stand here by now? is the result from what we did in the past.
The second personal story was about love and loss. As we know, Steve was the CEO of Apple Inc., who never got a bachelor degree, an usual human with a big persistence to gain his goals. His life was hard, he live in a rocky way, even it's hard, steve never give up. He was the founder of Apple but he was the one to who got fired by his own company, it became Steve's loss. I know it would really hard for Steve, and think "how can it be?" in my own mind.
But life is all about learning something new, from when he got fired, he started again a new company called NeXT and Pixar. That company grow as the time goes by, and finally Apple cooperate with his company, so he can back again to Apple Inc. Steve called it "love", he got back work with Apple and had a great family. Steve said that "you’ve got to find what you love", and Steve made it. His life stories was a really good teacher. He teach us how to reach our goals, make loss become love, until we've to find what we love, that was really good advice.
The third personal story was about death. We know that someday we'll face the death. For Steve, death comes with fear and chance to make a better one. When someone face to face with his/her own death, there is no reason for not following our heart. Steve teach us how to deal with death, it comes when he diagnosed with a cancer. So for now, we've to choose a right way consider that we’ll face death soon. We can learn so many things from Steve Jobs. Follow our heart, persistence, and never give up are some advice from Steve.
Even Steve already passed away, he was a good teacher. He had built Apple into a big company. Even there isn’t Steve Jobs again, he has already invention his idea in Apple. So thats why he so well-known person in this world. And for his speech and personal stories, I would like to say thanks for that, because I got so many benefit advices to face with problem and how to reach my goals.
